Youth fights tumour
Frank Matys: Orillia Today
May. 17, 2003
An Orillia youth recently diagnosed with a brain tumour is being surrounded by words of encouragement, both in person and over the Internet.
Classmates and relatives of Christopher Jackson are posting messages of support on a cheerful-looking Web site, featuring news, photos and other links, as he receives treatment for a tumor on his brain stem.
"His spirits seem to be up," said his father, Chris, describing the 10-year-old as a popular, affable student, whose dry sense of humor is well known to his peers at Hillcrest Public School.
"Very dry humour, but I'm accused of that too," he added. "They miss his jokes. He is just a hilarious kid."
His immediate family, including mother Sherry Blevins and 11-year-old sister Eliza, is staying at Ronald McDonald House in Toronto, to be near Princess Margaret Hospital, where Christopher has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments in recent weeks.
They are able to return home on weekends.
Christopher is also receiving the support of a team of neurological and oncology specialists from the Hospital for Sick Children. "He has gone at his (school) work with a fervor, when we have been able to put it in front of him," added his father.
A Web site developed by the family www.christopherforlife.com, allows Jackson to stay in touch with relatives and friends, who are kept up to date on his progress, while offering messages of support.
"He likes his computer," added David Jackson, Christopher's grandfather. "They are trying to keep people informed as to what is happening."
.
"He is doing good, he is talking to his friends, he is doing his homework," added David. "He is a bright intelligent kid."
